Gordon Powell
Gordon Powell was hired to teach 6th grade math, as well as computer classes, at the Middle School for Boys. In the past, he has also taught 8th grade algebra and Algebra II at the Upper School. Powell currently teaches 7th grade math and has served as the math coordinator for the Middle School. Additionally, he tutors Upper School students and has worked with Horizons-Upward Bound for over 20 years. In his classes, he teaches not only math but also the history of math, explaining the origins of the mathematical concepts his students learn today.

Powell enjoys teaching at the Middle School for Boys because “it is such a wonderful place. The faculty work together so well, and middle school students and parents are very nice to work with.” He enjoys developing relationships with his students, who then come back to visit his classroom. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award twice and the Dads’ Club Teacher Award in 2002.

In addition, Powell has served on the faculty council and the admissions committee. On Wednesday mornings, he helps middle school students prepare for MATHCOUNTS, a national mathematics competition.

Powell and his wife are the proud parents of four children. He enjoys watching football and collecting baseball cards in his free time.
