I was fortunate to have Fred's classes for two and a half years. Fred made math cool in his fish-tie-every-day kind of way. My calculus crowd was mostly made up of students who preferred the humanities side of the brain. Nonetheless, Fred motivated our group enough that we destroyed the AP exams. I looked forward to his tests because they were always brilliantly designed. He designed unique problems that forced you to do more problem solving and less busy work. Getting an "A" on one of his tests was like beating the Yankees. I remember one of his colleagues in the math department admitting to me that he would sometimes have Fred write his tests because Fred could turn out a masterpiece in minutes. Some teachers are good because they are gifted at teaching. Some are good because they have a brilliant command of their source material. Fred really was one of the teachers who was able to to take advantage of fitting both of these descriptions.

Mr. Fred, all those wonderful ties--advanced geometry has never been so simple to understand and heartfelt. If only it was as well taught at Dartmouth!
