Gary Gerson
Gary Gerson was one of the first teachers hired by Arlyce Seibert in the summer of 1987, when his contract stated that he would be an assistant house advisor in Coulter Hall, an assistant football coach, the head varsity fencing coach, and would teach in both the science department as geologist and Earth science teacher and the religion department teaching Old and New Testament. Before this appointment, Gerson received his BS from Vanderbilt University in 1985, while he played varsity football for the Commodores and was part of the last winning Vandy squad that went to the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1982. He also spent time doing archaeology in the Bliss Islands of New Brunswick and for the National Museum of Kenya south of Nairobi. Gerson was also head football coach and wide receiver/quarterback for the Amsterdam Rams of the Netherlands American Football Federation.

After 7 years of teaching at Cranbrook Kingswood, Gerson took a leave of absence from the classroom and returned to the classroom and the football field at the University of Windsor in Ontario. At the age of 30 and 31, he played two years for the Lancers as a starting wide receiver and caught his first touchdown pass in the 1994 season opener against McMaster.

At Cranbrook Kingswood, Gerson has helped to lead the development of the freshman Conceptual Physics course that replaced Measurement and Analysis (formerly IQS) and Earth Science, and he continues to teach geology. He received recognition from the Oakland Press for innovation in the classroom for the Physics curriculum and has edited the current version of Phys IX, the lab book for the course.

Since 1996, Gerson has been the head varsity football coach for the Cranes and says that his highest level of professional satisfaction came from the 9-0 regular season in 2004 after which the 11 senior leaders were accepted to and attended Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Duke (2), Columbia, Penn, Georgetown, Williams, and Embry Riddle Universities.

He has been married to Shelley (former middle school science teacher) for 17 years and is the proud father of Maddie, Eli, and Isaac.

While I only had the privilege of having Mr. Gerson as a teacher for one course, I did have the pleasure of hearing his brilliant pronunciation of my name, many times, over the loud speakers of Cranbrook basketball games! Mr. Gerson has always supplied passion into whatever he has done at Cranbrook, and I'm sure will continue to do so for years to come! A true gentleman and scholar.
