In 1922, eight students enrolled under Winter, when she became the first headmistress at Bloomfield Hills School, currently known as Brookside School.
Passionate and caring in her work, Winter was a tremendous inspiration and earned the respect of everyone she knew. From the very first days of the school she instituted an impressive ambiance of education, allowing teachers and students freedom of expression and advocating discipline.
Winter’s philosophy was that school should be exciting and fun, and that each child would take pride in their clothing, appearance and, most of all, actions in the classroom.
During her 39 years of service, the Brookside community became a family for Winter. She was protective and encouraging like a mother and worked tirelessly to make Brookside an ideal place to get an education.
