Mr Heavenrich was, without doubt, the best teacher I ever had. I was always rather a disappointment to him, since I never could learn to avoid silly and sloppy mistakes. But he taught one to try at least to be more careful. More importantly, he was really a fine person: almost the definition of a person of quality. If there was anyone whose character one would ever want to emulate, it would be Mr Heavenrich. Mrs Heavenrich was also always kind to all of us, and sometimes when I was engaged as a rather passive babysitter for Louis and Ted and Alan, I would gobble all of the cheese in their refrigerator without receiving too many complaints. Several decades after leaving Cranbrook, I married another (then) maths teacher, Cathy, whom I tried to flatter by saying that she looked and sounded a bit like Mrs Heavenrich - it was hard to think of higher praise.

Mr Heavenrich taught me the meaning of discipline. HE was a great mentor in his fastitious approach to algebra. He was the scholar athlete who pushed me to have the success that enjoy today. He made my Cranbrook algebra experience bearable as he relentlessly tutored me through what I sometimes thought was an impossible quadratic equation.
Although I never thanked him,no professor or coach ever had more of an impact than the ERN.

My memories of Cranbrook are vivid, as I imagine they are for most grads. Mr. Heavenrich, my algebra teacher, has always been a part of what I remember fondly of those young years. Mr. Heavenrich, as I knew him, was a very serious, but equally thoughtful man with a mission: push his students toward success. If that commitment meant more work for him -- it never seemed to be a problem. In my experiences with this great teacher -- his focus seemed to start and end with his students. I will always remember him as teacher who inspired me to do my best. He is a nice part of my vivid memories -- and will not be forgotten.

Mr. Heavenrich would be glad to know that his efforts with me finally paid off --- I actually got a B+ in my two college Calculus classes. Pretty good considering I think I finally got out of his pre-calc class with a D- !!!
Mr. Heavenrich was the most regular and regimented person I have ever met in my life. And I met him right after his wife had passed away... from the same disease my mother would die from five years later.
It is good to be disciplined. It doesn't feel good when it's happening, but it is a good thing.

Mr. Heavenrich always demanded the best, and knew we were capable of better. He cared, and in his understanding way made helped everyone become the best the could be

Mr. Heavenrich and I butted heads often. He'd mark me down because I'd make some careless error in adding up the final product of some elaborate problem I'd solved perfectly and I'd pout about it. I learned to respect that man.

I never attended the Cranbrook School but I have been there many times since Richard is my granfather, and my father (Alan Heavenrich) and his brothers (Louis and Ted) all attended and lived at Cranbrook. It is a beautiful school and my dad always remembers it fondly as a fun place. I just thought I would leave a comment because I am researching my family history and I found this page. My dad followed in his fathers footsteps and became a math teacher in Toronto.
Thank you for giving my father and my uncles and my grandfather these fond memories and opportunities.
