Cox serves as the faculty sponsor for the Cranbrook Kingswood Habitat for Humanity campus chapter, which works with Habitat for Humanity Detroit.

At Cranbrook, Cox established a girls' soccer program in 1986 and was the head coach of the varsity team for nine years. He has also coached boys' JV basketball, freshmen boys' soccer, boys' varsity-B tennis, girls' track and various intramural sports.

Cox earned his bachelor's degree from Brown University and a master's from Oakland University. He served as the interim head of the Mathematics Department at Cranbrook for one year.

After my first term of college, Mr. Cox talked to me and taught me how to get the most out of a small liberal arts college experience. His advice helped me turn an average college into an extraordinary one.

David Cox was my advisor my last two years at Cranbrook and was the easiest person to talk to. He was always there to talk about anything or nothing at all which I couldn't appreciate more. He left a few days before graduation for a trip and I regret that I never was able to say goodbye to him. But he stays with me in my heart to this day. There will never, ever be anyone that could compare to him in my book.
