Everett Arthurs
Ev Arthurs cut hair at Cranbrook for more than 53 years. He began his trade as an apprentice at age 12 in Keego Harbor before taking over for another barber in 1931 in the basement of Stevens Hall.

Although Arthurs was technically not a school employee, he regularly attended Cranbrook sporting events and knew nearly every student by their first name. He also kept a record of names and faces from the school's past with his collection of yearbooks, available to visitors who were waiting for a cut.

Arthurs' 50th year was celebrated by Cranbrook in 1981. Known not only as a barber, Arthurs was a friend and counselor to hundreds of students and faculty. He died in the summer of 1986. His barber chair has since been returned to Cranbrook House for permanent display, along with many of the relics he kept in his shop.

Ev, like the faculty and staff, was Cranbrook. He was someone you knew, and someone who knew you. He wasn't perfect, but he was indeed 'polished' - skilled in the art of humanity for the young, a friend to so many - why did we love him so?

Hanging out in Ev's shop, sitting on the bench, playing with the barber chair, teasing him . . . great memories. What a terrific guy.
